TRAVEL AGENCY TAX TIPS
Property/Site Inspection Did you know that every time you stay at a hotel or a resort or take a vacation, it can be a tax deduction. As a Travel Agent, when you go to a hotel, you can call them up and let them know that you're a travel agent and that you'll be in their area and would like to do a site inspection. You can then fill out a Property/Site Inspection Form and keep it, along with your receipts, to file on April 15th, for a tax savings.
Also, if you book travel directly with a vendor, you can SUBMIT A COMMISSION CLAIM FORM. I always submit these at the time I make the reservation. At the time the reservation is made, I am given a booking number.
Meals Meals with a current or prospective customer are 50% deductible but only if business is specifically discussed at the meal and if the cost is not "lavish or extravagant." You must have a receipt and write on it who you took out and why. Tips are considered part of the meal and are also 50% deductible.
Travel to and from the restaurant, including parking, is 100% deductible.
Meals while traveling away from home on business are 50% deductible.
Remember the best way to predict your future is to create it. Attached is a sample LFHF Travel Business Card (front & back) that I am currently printing.
